A dose of adversity is often as needful as a dose of medicine

Hardship and misfortune may be unpleasant, but they
can sometimes have a beneficial effect on the character, especially when people failto appreciate the good things they have:
Life has always been easy for him, and this spell of ill luck has hit him hard. But it may be all  for the best—they say that a dose of adversity is often as needful as a dose of medicine.
The proverb is recorded as a regional expres-sion in the United States.
