Pity is akin to…

Pity is akin to love

Pity and love arerelated emotions:
She pitied him, and although pity is akin to love, it is not the best  foundation for a lasting relationship.
The proverb was first recorded in 1696, but the sentiment it expresses is of earlier origin, occurring in Shakespeare’s play
Twelfth Night
(3:1): “I pity you.—That’s adegree to love.”
